So when I tried to leave work at 1:15 PM today, my 2007 Mercury Grand Marquis LS with 85,000 miles made an awful screeching sound once I turned the key. For some context, it had been sitting there since 6 AM, is located in the Florida panhandle, and the car just had the A/C control module ($600 remanufactured part) replaced a month ago.
After hearing the awful noise, which sounded like a slipping belt, I turned the A/C off, turned the car off, and restarted the car. No noise. Drove it for ~30 minutes, turned the A/C on, no noise.
Here's a completely useless picture of it as it currently sits for your viewing pleasure.

Did you check the belt? That would be the first place to look given your description. Based on the mileage, it would be reasonable to have the serpentine going bad. I don't know much about Panthers, but given the size of that engine bay, I'd expect it wouldn't be terribly difficult to replace it yourself.

Could likely be a slipping belt. A friend had an intermittent chirp on his SN95 Mustang at one point.
Check if the power steering has an effect, max the steering out, or turn back and forth. I had a similar issue with a Jetta.

You said you turned the A/C off before turning the car off, did it stop when you turned the A/C off?

As I turned the fan speed down it got quieter, but the noise didn't completely disappear.

check the belt condition, IIRC the belt on my marauder started squeaking on the 1-2 WOT shifts around 80,000 miles. 2v's are infamous for that shit to.

Not sure if you live in the rust belt but it could be your belt tensioner seizing up as well. My 03' did that when I bought it. Made a loud screeching sound.

I only bought the car 5 months ago, but I know the previous (original) owner and he never ventured out of Orlando in the 7 years he had it (now in northwest FL). However since it just had some A/C work done the tensioner may be off somewhat.

The tensioner is not adjustable. It's just a spring loaded pulley. On mine moisture got inside and the spring got seized up so it was barely moving.

I once had a belt that I "checked" and it seemed fine. A mechanic friend encouraged me to remove it and bend it backwards over my fingers - that's when I could see the cracks. Some others suggested pulley checking, which is good, but in depth belt checking would be good too.
